Pilgrimage on the half shell

Cold wind whips across the peninsula, shaking palm trees to little effect, it seems, on the tiny waves that lap timidly at an empty beach. That’s the way it is with winter surf, the locals say, but it’s hard to believe. It’s early on a Saturday night — dinner time — and that gorgeous Bolivar sunset is nowhere to be found. All is gray and quiet but for the unrelenting wind. Despite the fact that it’s still fall during my visit, technically, winter came hard and early this year, and Crystal Beach is suffering at Mother Nature’s cold hand. Business owners seem harried and frantic despite half-empty bars and dining rooms. It’s the worst winter since the peninsula “came back,” people say over and over. But I’m not here for the beach or the surf or the warm comfort of the sun on my skin. I’m here for the one thing you can only get after the cold settles into your bones. I’m here for oysters.
